Accessibility Statement

Last reviewed:

We believe everyone deserves equal access to information about our club and the work we do.

This accessibility statement applies to the Rotary Club of Victoria Island website at www.rotaryclubofvi.com. It is published by the Rotary Club of Victoria Island and was prepared on .

We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. This means you should be able to: zoom in up to 400% without content disappearing off the screen; navigate most of the website using a keyboard alone; navigate using speech recognition software; listen to most content using a screen reader.

1. Our commitment

The Rotary Club of Victoria Island is committed to making our website accessible to people with disabilities — in line with our core Rotary values of service and inclusion. We believe that access to information about our club, projects, and community should not be limited by a person's ability to see, hear, or interact with digital content in a conventional way.

We aim to achieve and maintain conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA — the internationally recognised standard for web accessibility — and we review this statement regularly.

Our accessibility work is ongoing. Where we fall short, we will tell you — and we will tell you what we are doing about it.

2. Standards we follow

We design and build this website to conform to:

  • WCAG 2.2 Level AA — published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), covering perceivability, operability, understandability, and robustness of web content.
  • WAI-ARIA 1.2 — for accessible rich internet applications, used in our interactive components (timeline, flashcard module, mobile navigation).
  • HTML Living Standard semantic markup — correct use of headings, landmarks, lists, links, buttons, and form controls so that assistive technologies can interpret page structure.

While Nigeria does not yet have a mandatory web accessibility standard equivalent to the UK's PSBAR or the US ADA/Section 508, we adopt WCAG 2.2 AA as our benchmark because it represents international best practice and reflects our commitment to genuine inclusion.

3. What we do to make this site accessible

Keyboard navigation

Every interactive element — navigation, buttons, form controls, timeline dots, flashcard controls — can be reached and activated using a keyboard alone.

Visible focus indicators

Focus rings are displayed on all interactive elements: 3px Royal Blue on light backgrounds, 3px Gold on dark backgrounds.

Skip link

A "Skip to main content" link appears at the top of every page for keyboard and screen reader users to bypass repeated navigation.

Colour contrast

Text and interactive elements meet WCAG 2.2 AA contrast ratios: minimum 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text and UI components.

Responsive design

Pages reflow correctly at 320px viewport width and zoom up to 400% without horizontal scrolling or loss of content.

Text alternatives

All meaningful images include descriptive alt text. Decorative images carry empty alt attributes so screen readers skip them.

Semantic headings

A single H1 per page, with a logical heading hierarchy (H2, H3) to aid navigation by screen reader users.

Page landmarks

We use HTML landmarks (<header>, <nav>, <main>, <footer>) and ARIA roles so screen readers can jump between page regions.

Link purpose

Link text describes the destination or action — we avoid generic labels like "click here" or "read more" without surrounding context.

Form labels

Every form input has a visible label positioned above the field. Error messages are associated with their inputs programmatically.

Reduced motion

All CSS animations and transitions are disabled for users who have set prefers-reduced-motion: reduce in their operating system.

Resizable text

Text can be resized up to 200% using browser zoom without loss of functionality or content truncation.

4. Known limitations

Despite our best efforts, some content may not yet fully meet WCAG 2.2 AA. We are aware of the following issues and are working to resolve them:

Third-party embedded maps or media

If we embed maps or video content from third-party providers (e.g., Google Maps, YouTube), those elements are controlled by external parties and may not fully meet our accessibility standards. We provide alternative text descriptions alongside all such embeds.

Mitigated — alternatives provided

Older PDF documents

Historical club documents (minutes, reports, newsletters) produced before this website was built may not be fully accessible to screen readers. We are progressively converting key documents to accessible HTML.

In progress

Placeholder images

Some project images currently use placeholder images from picsum.photos pending the supply of real photography. These carry appropriate alt text descriptions but are not true representations of the projects shown.

Will be resolved as photography is supplied

Complex data tables on small screens

The 45-year ledger timeline and some data tables may be harder to navigate on very small screens in specific screen reader configurations. A full text-only fallback list is available in the page HTML (aria-hidden from the visual interface but available to screen readers).

Accessible fallback provided

If you encounter an accessibility problem not listed above, please tell us using the contact details in Section 8.

5. Technical information

This website is built using:

  • Next.js 14 (React framework) with server-side rendering for fast, reliable page loads
  • Tailwind CSS for consistent, responsive styling
  • Framer Motion for animations — all of which respect prefers-reduced-motion
  • Phosphor Icons — icon components rendered as accessible SVGs with aria-hidden where decorative
  • next/image for optimised, lazy-loaded images with mandatory alt attributes
  • Outfit (sans-serif) as our primary typeface — a highly legible, variable-weight font loaded from Google Fonts with font-display: swap to prevent invisible text during loading

Browser and technology compatibility: This website is designed to work with current and recent versions of major browsers. We test in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. Internet Explorer is not supported.

6. Assistive technology compatibility

We aim for this website to work with the following assistive technologies:

Accessibility is an ongoing commitment, not a one-time task. We continuously monitor our site using a combination of automated tools, manual keyboard testing, and screen reader testing.

This statement was prepared in reference to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 published by the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI). Read it alongside our Privacy Policy.
